Skip hire in Burnham Market
Burnham Market is in the Norfolk County Council highway area. A skip on the public road, pavement or verge needs the council's skip licence, and a new application is needed every time a skip is placed. A skip wholly on a private drive you control does not. This page is placement and waste rules, not a list of firms.
About Burnham Market
Burnham Market is a village and civil parish 19 miles north-east of King's Lynn and 32 miles north-west of Norwich, one of the Norfolk Burnhams. It formed from the merger of Burnham Sutton, Burnham Ulph and Burnham Westgate, and had 724 residents at the 2021 census, down from 877 in 2011.
It sits where the B1155 and B1355 meet. Burnham Westgate Hall, a Grade II listed house built in the 1780s by Sir John Soane, stands in the village.
Skip Clerk does not invent provider rankings, phone numbers or "top skips in Burnham Market". Check the carrier's CBDU number, then ask who will apply for the road licence.
Which authority
Norfolk County Council is the highway authority for every Norfolk district (Breckland, Broadland, Great Yarmouth, King's Lynn and West Norfolk, North Norfolk, Norwich, South Norfolk). Full permit detail: Skip permit: Norfolk County Council. On the council's highways fees page (checked 26 October 2026; fees from 1 April 2026): £55.94 for the first 28 days and £55.94 for each further 28 days. The skip licence page asks for £5m public liability insurance, the waste carrier's certificate and a drawing of the skip position, so in practice the skip company applies. Trunk roads are National Highways, not the county. County map: Skip hire in Norfolk.
Private drive vs road
- Wholly on a driveway or other private land you control: no skip licence from Norfolk County Council.
- Any part on the public road, pavement or verge: yes, with a new application for each placement. The skip firm applies with its insurance and waste carrier's certificate.
- National rules: Do I need a skip permit?.
Local notes
Burnham Market is in the borough of King's Lynn and West Norfolk, but Norfolk County Council, not the borough council, licences skips on the road. The council does not print a notice period on its skip licence page, so ask the firm how much notice it needs, and expect a new application each time a skip is placed. The village is popular with visitors, so agree with the firm where the skip and lorry will go before delivery, and do not assume a green or verge can be used. Docking and Wells-next-the-Sea are nearby and under the same county licence; give the firm your full postcode, as there are several Burnhams.

Norfolk's recycling centres need a booked slot (free, up to one week ahead). DIY waste from work you did yourself on your own home is free up to two 50-litre sacks or one item per visit, with no more than four such visits in any four weeks; above that you pay as you throw (rubble, soil and stones £4.50, plasterboard £14 per 100 litres). Plasterboard is taken only at Caister, Dereham, Hempton, King's Lynn, Norwich North, Norwich South and Thetford, and no site takes asbestos. Waste from work you paid a trader for gets no free allowance. Source: Norfolk County Council: DIY waste and Norfolk Recycling Centre bookings.
How to hire without a fake directory
- Decide the size from the job – What size skip do I need?.
- If it has to sit on the road, tell the firm you are in the Norfolk County Council area and ask how much notice it needs for the licence. Recheck the council pages on the day you book.
- Ask for the waste-carrier number and check it – how to check a waste carrier licence.
- Keep plasterboard, electricals and sofas out of a mixed skip unless the operator says otherwise – what you cannot put in a skip.
Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no prices for skip hire on this page. The £55.94 figure is Norfolk County Council's published licence fee, not a hire quote. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link.
