Skip hire in Chatham
Chatham’s High Street has timed delivery rules for skips; Medway Council issues the highway skip licence here (not Kent County Council). A skip on the public road needs that licence – the skip company usually applies, not you. A skip wholly on a private drive you control does not. This page is placement and waste rules, not a list of firms.
Skip Clerk does not invent provider rankings, phone numbers or “top skips in Chatham”. Check the carrier’s CBDU number, then ask who will apply for the road licence.
Which authority
Medway Council is the highway authority for this town (unitary; not Kent County Council). Full permit detail: Skip permit: Medway Council. On that page (rechecked 10 September 2026): skip company usually applies, £73 for the first 14 days, at least three days’ notice, £5m public liability and registered waste carrier. County map: Skip hire in Kent. Most of the rest of Kent: Skip permit: Kent County Council.
Private drive vs road
- Wholly on a driveway or other private land you control: no Medway highway licence.
- Any part on the public road or adopted highway: yes. The skip company usually applies.
- National rule: Do I need a skip permit?.
Local placement note
Medway’s licence page (rechecked 10 September 2026): on Chatham High Street, skips must be delivered before 10am and collected after 5pm because traffic is prohibited in between. High-street skips elsewhere in Medway may need nightly remove unless lockable and raised on blocks. Prefer a private drive where you can. Fee: £73 for 14 days; at least three days’ notice.
How to hire without a fake directory
- Decide the size from the job – What size skip do I need?.
- If it has to sit on the road, tell the firm you are in the Medway Council highway area and ask them to apply. Give them at least three days.
- Ask for the waste-carrier number and check it – how to check a waste carrier licence.
- Keep plasterboard, electricals and sofas out of a mixed skip unless the operator says otherwise – what you cannot put in a skip.
Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no prices for skip hire on this page. The £73 figure is Medway Council’s published permit fee, not a hire quote. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link.
