Skip hire in Hockering
Hockering is in the Norfolk County Council highway area. A skip on the public road, pavement or verge needs the council's skip licence, and a new application is needed every time a skip is placed. A skip wholly on a private drive you control does not. This page is placement and waste rules, not a list of firms.
About Hockering
Hockering is a village and civil parish in Breckland district, 5.2 miles east of Dereham and 10 miles north-west of Norwich, on the A47. It had 829 residents at the 2021 census, up from 711 in 2011.
The Domesday Book lists it as 47 households in the hundred of Mitford; in the Second World War Hockering Wood was an RAF supply dump and part of the parish became RAF Attlebridge, and St Michael's Church on The Street, from the 15th century, has been Grade I listed since 1960.
Skip Clerk does not invent provider rankings, phone numbers or "top skips in Hockering". Check the carrier's CBDU number, then ask who will apply for the road licence.
Which authority
Norfolk County Council is the highway authority for every Norfolk district (Breckland, Broadland, Great Yarmouth, King's Lynn and West Norfolk, North Norfolk, Norwich, South Norfolk). Full permit detail: Skip permit: Norfolk County Council. On the council's highways fees page (checked 25 October 2026; fees from 1 April 2026): £55.94 for the first 28 days and £55.94 for each further 28 days. The skip licence page asks for £5m public liability insurance, the waste carrier's certificate and a drawing of the skip position, so in practice the skip company applies. Trunk roads are National Highways, not the county. County map: Skip hire in Norfolk.
Private drive vs road
- Wholly on a driveway or other private land you control: no skip licence from Norfolk County Council.
- Any part on the public road, pavement or verge: yes, with a new application for each placement. The skip firm applies with its insurance and waste carrier's certificate.
- National rules: Do I need a skip permit?.
Local notes
Hockering is in Breckland district, but Norfolk County Council, not the district council, licences skips on the road. The council does not print a notice period on its skip licence page, so ask the firm how much notice it needs, and expect a new application each time a skip is placed. The A47 is a trunk road run by National Highways, not the county, so do not plan on a skip on it; if your home fronts it, keep the skip on your drive and agree with the firm where the lorry will stop. St Michael's Church on The Street is Grade I listed; on a narrow village street, check the lorry can reach before you book.

Norfolk's recycling centres need a booked slot (free, up to one week ahead). DIY waste from work you did yourself on your own home is free up to two 50-litre sacks or one item per visit, with no more than four such visits in any four weeks; above that you pay as you throw (rubble, soil and stones £4.50, plasterboard £14 per 100 litres). Plasterboard is taken only at Caister, Dereham, Hempton, King's Lynn, Norwich North, Norwich South and Thetford, and no site takes asbestos. Waste from work you paid a trader for gets no free allowance. Source: Norfolk County Council: DIY waste and Norfolk Recycling Centre bookings.
How to hire without a fake directory
- Decide the size from the job – What size skip do I need?.
- If it has to sit on the road, tell the firm you are in the Norfolk County Council area and ask how much notice it needs for the licence. Recheck the council pages on the day you book.
- Ask for the waste-carrier number and check it – how to check a waste carrier licence.
- Keep plasterboard, electricals and sofas out of a mixed skip unless the operator says otherwise – what you cannot put in a skip.
Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no prices for skip hire on this page. The £55.94 figure is Norfolk County Council's published licence fee, not a hire quote. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link.
