Skip hire in Salhouse

First published 20 October 2026. Last checked 20 October 2026.

Salhouse is in the Norfolk County Council highway area. A skip on the public road, pavement or verge needs the council's skip licence, and a new application is needed every time a skip is placed. A skip wholly on a private drive you control does not. This page is placement and waste rules, not a list of firms.

About Salhouse

Salhouse is a village and civil parish in the Broads, in Broadland district, south of the River Bure and Salhouse Broad and about 6 miles north-east of Norwich. The parish covers 8.96 square kilometres and had 1,486 residents at the 2011 census.

The name comes from an old word for sallow willows, and locally it is said 'Sallas' rather than 'Sal-house'. The thatched All Saints Church, mostly 14th century, stands on a hill beside the B1140 road to Wroxham.

Skip Clerk does not invent provider rankings, phone numbers or "top skips in Salhouse". Check the carrier's CBDU number, then ask who will apply for the road licence.

Which authority

Norfolk County Council is the highway authority for every Norfolk district (Breckland, Broadland, Great Yarmouth, King's Lynn and West Norfolk, North Norfolk, Norwich, South Norfolk). Full permit detail: Skip permit: Norfolk County Council. On the council's highways fees page (checked 20 October 2026; fees from 1 April 2026): £55.94 for the first 28 days and £55.94 for each further 28 days. The skip licence page asks for £5m public liability insurance, the waste carrier's certificate and a drawing of the skip position, so in practice the skip company applies. Trunk roads are National Highways, not the county. County map: Skip hire in Norfolk.

Local notes

Salhouse is in Broadland district, but Norfolk County Council, not the district council, licences skips on the road. The council does not print a notice period on its skip licence page, so ask the firm how much notice it needs, and expect a new application each time a skip is placed. Land next to the river and the broad is in the Broads Authority's area, but the Broads Authority does not licence skips on the road; Norfolk County Council does. The post office and village store are on Lower Street, so if you live near the shops agree where the lorry will stop before delivery.

Norfolk's recycling centres need a booked slot (free, up to one week ahead). DIY waste from work you did yourself on your own home is free up to two 50-litre sacks or one item per visit, with no more than four such visits in any four weeks; above that you pay as you throw (rubble, soil and stones £4.50, plasterboard £14 per 100 litres). Plasterboard is taken only at Caister, Dereham, Hempton, King's Lynn, Norwich North, Norwich South and Thetford, and no site takes asbestos. Waste from work you paid a trader for gets no free allowance. Source: Norfolk County Council: DIY waste and Norfolk Recycling Centre bookings.

How to hire without a fake directory

  1. Decide the size from the job – What size skip do I need?.
  2. If it has to sit on the road, tell the firm you are in the Norfolk County Council area and ask how much notice it needs for the licence. Recheck the council pages on the day you book.
  3. Ask for the waste-carrier number and check it – how to check a waste carrier licence.
  4. Keep plasterboard, electricals and sofas out of a mixed skip unless the operator says otherwise – what you cannot put in a skip.

Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no prices for skip hire on this page. The £55.94 figure is Norfolk County Council's published licence fee, not a hire quote. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link.
