Skip hire in Watford

First published 12 September 2026. Last checked 12 September 2026.

Watford sits in the Hertfordshire County Council highway area. A skip on the public road needs that council’s licence – the skip company usually applies, not you. A skip wholly on a private drive you control does not. This page is placement and waste rules, not a list of firms.

Private drive vs road

• Wholly on a driveway or other private land you control: no Hertfordshire County Council highway licence.
• Any part on the public road or adopted highway: yes. The skip company usually applies.
• National rule: Do I need a skip permit?.

Local notes

High Street pedestrianisation pushes drops onto side streets; Hertfordshire County Council is the highway authority (not the borough). Fee note: £54 for 14 days, rechecked 12 Sep 2026.

The fee note above is from Hertfordshire County Council’s published page (or an honest note when none was printed), not a hire quote.

How to hire without a fake directory

1. Decide the size from the job – What size skip do I need?.
2. If it has to sit on the road, tell the firm you are in the Hertfordshire County Council highway area and ask them to apply. Give them the notice on the permit page.
3. Ask for the waste-carrier number and check it – how to check a waste carrier licence.
4. Keep plasterboard, electricals and sofas out of a mixed skip unless the operator says otherwise – what you cannot put in a skip.
