Permits
Skip permit: Dorset Council
If the skip sits on a public road in the Dorset Council area, you need a highway skip licence. On the council page checked 12 Sep 2026: £93 new for 14 days. contractor/skip company applies. A skip wholly on private land you control does not need this licence.
You usually do not apply as a householder. Tell the hire firm at booking and give them the notice the council asks for. Do not put the skip on the pavement unless the licence allows it.
When you need one
- Public road or highway in the Dorset Council area: yes.

- Any encroachment onto the highway counts as on the highway.

Who applies
Follow what Dorset Council publishes: contractor/skip company applies; at least 2 weeks’ notice. That matches the usual England pattern – the skip company applies.

A sensible order
- Can it sit wholly on the drive? If yes, book that and skip the licence.
- If it has to go on the road, tell the hire firm at booking. They apply. Give them the notice above.
- Check their waste-carrier number – how to check a waste carrier licence.
- Size the job on the size guide.
Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no skip-hire prices on this page. Fee figures above are the council’s published permit charges (or an honest note when none was printed), not a hire quote.
