Skip hire in Bristol
Bristol is a unitary city. A skip on the public road needs a Bristol City Council highway permit – only the skip company applies. A skip wholly on a private drive you control does not. This page is placement and waste rules, not a list of firms.
Skip Clerk does not invent provider rankings, phone numbers or “top skips in Bristol”. Check the carrier’s CBDU number, then ask who will apply for the road licence.
Which authority
Bristol City Council is the highway authority. Full permit detail: Skip permit: Bristol City Council. On that page (checked 1 September 2026; still the live figures we cite): £90 for a calendar month, £144 retrospective, at least four working days’ notice, skip company only, £5m third-party insurance. Neighbours on the map: Keynsham is BANES, Nailsea is North Somerset – see Skip hire in Somerset for that edge.
Private drive vs road
- Wholly on a driveway or other private land you control: no Bristol highway permit.
- Any part on the public road or highway: yes. The hire firm applies.
- Pavement: you cannot put a skip there. National rule: Do I need a skip permit?.
Reuse and Recycling Centres
Bristol runs three Reuse and Recycling Centres: St Philips (Days Road), Avonmouth (Kings Weston Lane), and Hartcliffe Way. You must book a visit. Sites are for Bristol residents (or local university students) only – take photo ID and proof of a Bristol address. Arriving by bike or on foot: only Hartcliffe Way allows on foot without a booking; bike still needs ID. Checked against Bristol’s booking page on 2 September 2026.
That is an HWRC rule, not a substitute for a licensed skip carrier when the pile is too big for a booked visit.
How to hire without a fake directory
- Decide the size from the job – What size skip do I need?.
- If it has to sit on the road, tell the firm you are in Bristol City Council and ask them to apply. Give them more than four working days.
- Ask for the waste-carrier number and check it – how to check a waste carrier licence.
- Keep plasterboard, electricals and sofas out of a mixed skip unless the operator says otherwise – plasterboard and skips and what you cannot put in a skip.
Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no prices for skip hire on this page. The £90 / £144 figures are Bristol’s published permit fees, not a hire quote. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link.
