Waste
Plasterboard and skips
Do not treat plasterboard as ordinary mixed skip waste. Environment Agency landfill guidance says gypsum-based waste must not go to a landfill cell that accepts biodegradable waste. Book a dedicated plasterboard skip or bag, or use the council’s plasterboard bay, unless the hire firm has a written segregation rule you can follow. When a separate bag is required: Plasterboard: when a separate bag is required.
Operators disagree on bagged plasterboard inside a mixed skip. Some refuse it outright. Some will take it if it is bagged or kept in its own compartment. Their list wins for that booking. Ask before you load a sheet.
What the rule actually says
The live GOV.UK page for England is Dispose of waste to landfill (Environment Agency; last updated 12 March 2025). The gypsum section is blunt:
- You must not send gypsum-based waste (for example plasterboard) to a landfill cell that accepts biodegradable waste.
- You must separate it for re-use or recovery to comply with the waste hierarchy.
- If it has to go to landfill, the operator must confirm the site has a separate cell that does not accept biodegradable waste.
That is not a headline “plasterboard is banned from every landfill”. It is a cell rule. Mixed domestic skips are hard to keep inside that rule, which is why hire firms treat plasterboard as a separate stream.
The same guidance applies to other gypsum and high-sulphate waste. Painted, tiled or timber-backed board is still gypsum until the operator says otherwise. Asbestos-containing board is a different problem – stop and follow GOV.UK: asbestos in your home. Do not put suspect board in any hire skip.
What to book
| Load | Usual route | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| A few offcuts from a small patch | Council HWRC plasterboard bay, if yours has one | Pre-book if the council asks. Keep it free of timber, tiles and masonry. |
| Whole sheets from a room strip-out | Dedicated plasterboard skip or bag | Tell the firm it is gypsum when you book. Keep it dry if you can. |
| Kitchen or bathroom refit with mixed waste plus boarding | Mixed skip for the fit-out, plus a plasterboard collection | See kitchen and bathroom. Do not bury sheets under units. |
| Bagged plasterboard in a mixed skip | Only if that operator says yes | Not a national “allowed amount”. If they refuse the load, you pay for the mistake. |
There is no single national plasterboard skip size. Firms sell dedicated gypsum skips and bags in the same yard range as mixed skips. Size the mixed waste on the size guide; size the boarding with the operator.
HWRC instead of a skip
Householders can often take a small amount of DIY plasterboard to a recycling site. That is a local rule. Check the council page before you drive. Somerset Council, for example, publishes a household DIY plasterboard route with a booked monthly allowance – details on Skip hire in Somerset. Trade waste is usually refused or charged as commercial.
Keep board clean of contamination. Wood, masonry, tiles and fixings belong in a different stream.
Placement and the carrier
- A second dedicated skip still needs space. Driveway: usually no highway permit. Road: you need a licence – Do I need a skip permit?.
- Check the firm’s waste-carrier number (CBDU…) – how to check a waste carrier licence.
- Full banned and restricted list: what you cannot put in a skip.
Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no prices on this page. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link. Until then, use a licensed local operator and confirm the load type with them.
