Skip hire in Broomfield
Broomfield is in the Essex County Council highway area (not Southend-on-Sea or Thurrock). A skip on the public road needs that council's licence – a licensed skip contractor applies, not you. A skip wholly on a private drive you control does not. This page is placement and waste rules, not a list of firms.
About Broomfield
Broomfield is a suburban village and civil parish in Chelmsford district, on the northern edge of the city's built-up area. It is home to Broomfield Hospital, one of the largest in the East of England, and to an Anglo-Saxon princely burial found by workmen in 1888.
Its church, St Mary with St Leonard on Church Green, has a round tower, which is unusual in Essex. At the 2021 census the parish had 6,756 people.
Skip Clerk does not invent provider rankings, phone numbers or "top skips in Broomfield". Check the carrier's CBDU number, then ask who will apply for the road licence.
Which authority
Essex County Council (Essex Highways) is the highway authority (not Southend-on-Sea or Thurrock). Full permit detail: Skip permit: Essex County Council. On that page (fees rechecked 14 October 2026 on Essex Highways' live skips page and fees-2026-27.css): £111.66 application and £111.66 renewal, licence valid two weeks; at least ten working days' notice; skip contractor only; £10m public liability; max 6-yard skip on the highway. County map: Skip hire in Essex.
Private drive vs road
- Wholly on a driveway or other private land you control: no highway licence from Essex County Council.
- Any part on the public road or highway: yes. A licensed skip contractor applies – householders cannot.
- Pavement: you cannot put a skip there. National rule: Do I need a skip permit?.
Local notes
Broomfield adjoins Chelmsford, but Essex County Council, not the city council, licences skips on the road; being next to the city does not change that. Several bus routes run between Broomfield and the city centre, and Broomfield Hospital is in the village, so if you live on a main road ask the firm to plan a safe drop or use your drive. Any part on the highway needs a licensed skip contractor and at least ten working days' notice.
Essex County Council recycling centres (Love Essex) are for household waste; some sites accept limited DIY waste if you did the work yourself. Rules, booking and DIY limits change, so check before you travel and keep plasterboard and soil within the published limits. Source: Love Essex: DIY waste and find a recycling centre.
How to hire without a fake directory
- Decide the size from the job – What size skip do I need?.
- If it has to sit on the road, tell the firm you are in the Essex County Council area (not Southend-on-Sea or Thurrock) and ask them to apply. Recheck the council fees page on the day you book.
- Ask for the waste-carrier number and check it – how to check a waste carrier licence.
- Keep plasterboard, electricals and sofas out of a mixed skip unless the operator says otherwise – what you cannot put in a skip.
Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no prices for skip hire on this page. The £111.66 figure is Essex County Council's published permit fee, not a hire quote. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link.
