Skip hire in Canvey Island
Canvey Island’s sea wall approaches and island bridges leave limited room for large skip lorries in season. Essex County Council (Essex Highways) issues the highway skip licence for most roads here. A skip on the public road needs that licence – a licensed skip contractor applies, not you. A skip wholly on a private drive you control does not. This page is placement and waste rules, not a list of firms.
Skip Clerk does not invent provider rankings, phone numbers or “top skips in Canvey Island”. Check the carrier’s CBDU number, then ask who will apply for the road licence.
Which authority
Essex County Council (Essex Highways) is the highway authority (not Southend or Thurrock). Full permit detail: Skip permit: Essex County Council. On that page (fees rechecked 12 September 2026 from Essex Highways fees-2026-27.css): contractor only, £111.66 application and £111.66 renewal, at least ten working days, 2-week licence, £10m public liability, max 6-yard skip on the highway. County map: Skip hire in Essex.
Private drive vs road
- Wholly on a driveway or other private land you control: no Essex County Council highway licence.
- Any part on the public road or adopted highway: yes. A licensed skip contractor applies – householders cannot.
- National rule: Do I need a skip permit?.
Local placement note
Furtherwick Road and the seafront get congested in summer; the island’s two road bridges are the only HGV routes on and off. Prefer a private-drive or rear-yard drop if you have one. For a highway skip, only a contractor applies, with at least ten working days and a 6-yard maximum. Fee: £111.66 for a two-week licence (2026), rechecked 12 September 2026.
How to hire without a fake directory
- Decide the size from the job – What size skip do I need?. On an Essex Highways road the published maximum is a 6-yard skip.
- If it has to sit on the road, tell the firm you are in the Essex County Council highway area and ask them to apply. Give them at least ten working days.
- Ask for the waste-carrier number and check it – how to check a waste carrier licence.
- Keep plasterboard, electricals and sofas out of a mixed skip unless the operator says otherwise – what you cannot put in a skip.
Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no prices for skip hire on this page. The £111.66 figure is Essex Highways’ published permit fee, not a hire quote. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link.
