Skip hire in Edinburgh
Edinburgh’s roads authority is the City of Edinburgh Council. A skip on the public road needs a Section 85 permission under the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984 – the skip hire company applies, not you. A skip wholly on a private drive you control does not. This page is placement and waste rules, not a list of firms.
Skip Clerk does not invent provider rankings, phone numbers or “top skips in Edinburgh”. Check the carrier on SEPA, then ask who will apply for the road permit.
Which authority
City of Edinburgh Council is the roads authority. Full permit detail: Skip permit: City of Edinburgh Council. On that page (checked 11 September 2026): skip hire company applies; Road Services 2026/27 schedule £42 per week up to 14 yards (£126 for 20/40-yard); application pack needs at least five working days and payment with the form; max 5 m × 2 m on the pack; no roll-on/off on those conditions. Private drive vs road
- Wholly on a driveway or other private land you control: no roads-authority permit.
- Any part on the public road or footway: yes. Ask the hire firm to apply under the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984.
- National rule: Do I need a skip permit?.
Household recycling centres (booked only)
Edinburgh’s household waste recycling centres at Seafield, Craigmillar and Sighthill are appointment-only for Edinburgh residents. Turn up without a booking and you cannot enter. Book online before you go. Source: Edinburgh HWRCs and book a visit.
Trams and parking bays
The Section 85 pack flags tram-route streets and asks you to contact roadoccupation@edinburgh.gov.uk before works near the tram. Skips are not permitted on Greenways, Clearways or double yellow lines; parking-bay suspensions are a separate charge. Tell the hire firm early if you are near the tram or on a controlled bay.
How to hire without a fake directory
- Decide the size from the job – What size skip do I need?.
- If it has to sit on the road, name the roads authority and ask the firm to apply. Scotland is not Highways Act 1980.
- Ask for the waste-carrier number and check it on SEPA – how to check a waste carrier licence.
- Keep plasterboard, electricals and sofas out of a mixed skip unless the operator says otherwise – what you cannot put in a skip.
Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no prices for skip hire on this page. The £42 figure is Edinburgh’s published 2026/27 road-occupation charge for skips up to 14 yards, not a hire quote. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link.
