Skip hire in Galleywood

First published 12 October 2026. Last checked 12 October 2026.

Galleywood is in the Essex County Council highway area (not Southend-on-Sea or Thurrock). A skip on the public road needs that council's licence – a licensed skip contractor applies, not you. A skip wholly on a private drive you control does not. This page is placement and waste rules, not a list of firms.

About Galleywood

Galleywood is a village and civil parish on the south-western edge of Chelmsford, about 30 miles from London. The A12 trunk road runs close by, and the parish includes Galleywood Common, a large area of open grassland and woodland.

Historically the common hosted horse racing; today the village sits between Chelmsford's suburbs and the surrounding farmland.

Skip Clerk does not invent provider rankings, phone numbers or "top skips in Galleywood". Check the carrier's CBDU number, then ask who will apply for the road licence.

Which authority

Essex County Council (Essex Highways) is the highway authority (not Southend-on-Sea or Thurrock). Full permit detail: Skip permit: Essex County Council. On that page (fees rechecked 12 October 2026 on Essex Highways' live skips page and fees-2026-27.css): £111.66 application and £111.66 renewal, licence valid two weeks; at least ten working days' notice; skip contractor only; £10m public liability; max 6-yard skip on the highway. Private drive vs road

Local notes

Galleywood sits on Chelmsford's edge but Essex Highways, not Chelmsford City Council, issues the skip licence for the highway. Access past Galleywood Common and onto the A12 slip roads can be awkward for a long vehicle at peak times; a private-drive drop avoids the licence if the skip stays wholly off the road. On the highway the published maximum size is a 6-yard skip.

Essex County Council recycling centres (Love Essex) are for household waste; some sites accept limited DIY waste if you did the work yourself. Rules, booking and DIY limits change, so check before you travel and keep plasterboard and soil within the published limits. Source: Love Essex: DIY waste and find a recycling centre.

How to hire without a fake directory

  1. Decide the size from the job – What size skip do I need?.
  2. If it has to sit on the road, tell the firm you are in the Essex County Council area (not Southend-on-Sea or Thurrock) and ask them to apply. Recheck the council fees page on the day you book.
  3. Ask for the waste-carrier number and check it – how to check a waste carrier licence.
  4. Keep plasterboard, electricals and sofas out of a mixed skip unless the operator says otherwise – what you cannot put in a skip.

Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no prices for skip hire on this page. The £111.66 figure is Essex County Council's published permit fee, not a hire quote. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link.
