Skip hire in Great Horkesley

First published 15 October 2026. Last checked 15 October 2026.

Great Horkesley is in the Essex County Council highway area (not Southend-on-Sea or Thurrock). A skip on the public road needs that council's licence – a licensed skip contractor applies, not you. A skip wholly on a private drive you control does not. This page is placement and waste rules, not a list of firms.

About Great Horkesley

Great Horkesley is a village and civil parish in the City of Colchester district, about 3 miles north of Colchester. Little Horkesley, just to the north, is a separate parish.

Much of the land was once marsh until farmers drained it, which is why the main road is called The Causeway. At the 2021 census the parish had 2,697 people.

Skip Clerk does not invent provider rankings, phone numbers or "top skips in Great Horkesley". Check the carrier's CBDU number, then ask who will apply for the road licence.

Private drive vs road

Local notes

Great Horkesley is in the City of Colchester district, but Essex County Council, not Colchester City Council, licences skips on the road. If you live on The Causeway, the main road, a drop wholly on your own drive avoids the road licence and the traffic. Any part on the highway needs a licensed contractor's application at least ten working days ahead.

Essex County Council recycling centres (Love Essex) are for household waste; some sites accept limited DIY waste if you did the work yourself. Rules, booking and DIY limits change, so check before you travel and keep plasterboard and soil within the published limits. Source: Love Essex: DIY waste and find a recycling centre.

How to hire without a fake directory

  1. Decide the size from the job – What size skip do I need?.
  2. If it has to sit on the road, tell the firm you are in the Essex County Council area (not Southend-on-Sea or Thurrock) and ask them to apply. Recheck the council fees page on the day you book.
  3. Ask for the waste-carrier number and check it – how to check a waste carrier licence.
  4. Keep plasterboard, electricals and sofas out of a mixed skip unless the operator says otherwise – what you cannot put in a skip.

Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no prices for skip hire on this page. The £111.66 figure is Essex County Council's published permit fee, not a hire quote. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link.
