Skip hire in Hilgay

First published 23 October 2026. Last checked 23 October 2026.

Hilgay is in the Norfolk County Council highway area. A skip on the public road, pavement or verge needs the council's skip licence, and a new application is needed every time a skip is placed. A skip wholly on a private drive you control does not. This page is placement and waste rules, not a list of firms.

About Hilgay

Hilgay is a village and civil parish in the borough of King's Lynn and West Norfolk, 4 miles south of Downham Market and 38 miles west of Norwich, close to the River Wissey and the River Great Ouse; the parish also includes the hamlet of Ten Mile Bank. It had 1,346 residents at the 2021 census.

The A10 passes through the village, Modney Priory was built in the parish in 1291, and All Saints' Church on Church Road, restored by George Edmund Street in the 1860s, has been Grade II listed since 1959.

Skip Clerk does not invent provider rankings, phone numbers or "top skips in Hilgay". Check the carrier's CBDU number, then ask who will apply for the road licence.

Which authority

Norfolk County Council is the highway authority for every Norfolk district (Breckland, Broadland, Great Yarmouth, King's Lynn and West Norfolk, North Norfolk, Norwich, South Norfolk). Full permit detail: Skip permit: Norfolk County Council. On the council's highways fees page (checked 23 October 2026; fees from 1 April 2026): £55.94 for the first 28 days and £55.94 for each further 28 days. The skip licence page asks for £5m public liability insurance, the waste carrier's certificate and a drawing of the skip position, so in practice the skip company applies. Trunk roads are National Highways, not the county. County map: Skip hire in Norfolk.

Local notes

Hilgay is in the borough of King's Lynn and West Norfolk, but Norfolk County Council, not the borough council, licences skips on the road. The council does not print a notice period on its skip licence page, so ask the firm how much notice it needs, and expect a new application each time a skip is placed. The A10 passes through the village; if your home fronts it, keep the skip on your drive if you can and agree where the lorry will stop. The parish includes Ten Mile Bank, so give the firm your full postcode, and near the Wissey or the Great Ouse keep the skip on firm ground well back from the bank.

Norfolk's recycling centres need a booked slot (free, up to one week ahead). DIY waste from work you did yourself on your own home is free up to two 50-litre sacks or one item per visit, with no more than four such visits in any four weeks; above that you pay as you throw (rubble, soil and stones £4.50, plasterboard £14 per 100 litres). Plasterboard is taken only at Caister, Dereham, Hempton, King's Lynn, Norwich North, Norwich South and Thetford, and no site takes asbestos. Waste from work you paid a trader for gets no free allowance. Source: Norfolk County Council: DIY waste and Norfolk Recycling Centre bookings.

How to hire without a fake directory

  1. Decide the size from the job – What size skip do I need?.
  2. If it has to sit on the road, tell the firm you are in the Norfolk County Council area and ask how much notice it needs for the licence. Recheck the council pages on the day you book.
  3. Ask for the waste-carrier number and check it – how to check a waste carrier licence.
  4. Keep plasterboard, electricals and sofas out of a mixed skip unless the operator says otherwise – what you cannot put in a skip.

Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no prices for skip hire on this page. The £55.94 figure is Norfolk County Council's published licence fee, not a hire quote. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link.
