Skip hire in Methwold
Methwold is in the Norfolk County Council highway area. A skip on the public road, pavement or verge needs the council's skip licence, and a new application is needed every time a skip is placed. A skip wholly on a private drive you control does not. This page is placement and waste rules, not a list of firms.
About Methwold
Methwold, whose name means 'middle forest', is a village and civil parish in the borough of King's Lynn and West Norfolk, on the edge of the Fens and Breckland. At 49 km² it is the second largest parish in Norfolk; it had 1,502 residents in 591 households at the 2011 census and includes the hamlets of Methwold Hythe and Brookville.
The village is about 15 miles north-west of Thetford, its postal town, and some light industry now uses the former RAF Methwold bomber base just to the south.
Skip Clerk does not invent provider rankings, phone numbers or "top skips in Methwold". Check the carrier's CBDU number, then ask who will apply for the road licence.
Which authority
Norfolk County Council is the highway authority for every Norfolk district (Breckland, Broadland, Great Yarmouth, King's Lynn and West Norfolk, North Norfolk, Norwich, South Norfolk). Full permit detail: Skip permit: Norfolk County Council. On the council's highways fees page (checked 21 October 2026; fees from 1 April 2026): £55.94 for the first 28 days and £55.94 for each further 28 days. The skip licence page asks for £5m public liability insurance, the waste carrier's certificate and a drawing of the skip position, so in practice the skip company applies. Trunk roads are National Highways, not the county. County map: Skip hire in Norfolk.
Private drive vs road
- Wholly on a driveway or other private land you control: no skip licence from Norfolk County Council.
- Any part on the public road, pavement or verge: yes, with a new application for each placement. The skip firm applies with its insurance and waste carrier's certificate.
- National rules: Do I need a skip permit?.
Local notes
Methwold is in the borough of King's Lynn and West Norfolk, but Norfolk County Council, not the borough council, licences skips on the road. The council does not print a notice period on its skip licence page, so ask the firm how much notice it needs, and expect a new application each time a skip is placed. Thetford is the postal town, but Methwold is in the borough of King's Lynn and West Norfolk; give the firm the village and full postcode so it applies for the right road. The parish is large and rural, with Methwold Hythe about a mile west on the edge of the fens, so check the lorry can reach and turn at your address.

Norfolk's recycling centres need a booked slot (free, up to one week ahead). DIY waste from work you did yourself on your own home is free up to two 50-litre sacks or one item per visit, with no more than four such visits in any four weeks; above that you pay as you throw (rubble, soil and stones £4.50, plasterboard £14 per 100 litres). Plasterboard is taken only at Caister, Dereham, Hempton, King's Lynn, Norwich North, Norwich South and Thetford, and no site takes asbestos. Waste from work you paid a trader for gets no free allowance. Source: Norfolk County Council: DIY waste and Norfolk Recycling Centre bookings.
How to hire without a fake directory
- Decide the size from the job – What size skip do I need?.
- If it has to sit on the road, tell the firm you are in the Norfolk County Council area and ask how much notice it needs for the licence. Recheck the council pages on the day you book.
- Ask for the waste-carrier number and check it – how to check a waste carrier licence.
- Keep plasterboard, electricals and sofas out of a mixed skip unless the operator says otherwise – what you cannot put in a skip.
Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no prices for skip hire on this page. The £55.94 figure is Norfolk County Council's published licence fee, not a hire quote. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link.
