Skip hire in Sonning Common
Sonning Common is in the Oxfordshire County Council highway area. A skip on the public road needs that council’s licence – the hire firm applies, not you. A skip wholly on a private drive you control does not. This page is placement and waste rules, not a list of firms.
About Sonning Common
Sonning Common is a village and civil parish in a relatively flat, former common land part of the Chiltern Hills in South Oxfordshire, centred 3.5 miles (6 km) west south-west of Henley-on-Thames and 2.5 miles (4 km) north of Reading. Skip Clerk does not invent provider rankings, phone numbers or “top skips in Sonning Common”. Check the carrier’s CBDU number, then ask who will apply for the road licence.
Which authority
Oxfordshire County Council is the highway authority. Full permit detail: Skip permit: Oxfordshire County Council. On that page (checked 24 September 2026; live council page still lists these figures): £125 for 7 days not on a bus route, £140 on a bus route, plus £50 / £55 per extra 7 days, at least five working days’ notice, skip owner or supplier with an operator licence first. Do not invent a different fee. County map: Skip hire in Oxfordshire.
Private drive vs road
- Wholly on a driveway or other private land you control: no highway licence from Oxfordshire County Council.
- Any part on the public road or highway: yes. The hire firm applies.
- Pavement: you cannot put a skip there. National rule: Do I need a skip permit?.
Local notes
Sonning Common sits in South Oxfordshire under Oxfordshire County Council as highway authority. Prefer a private drive if you control one; village streets need clear width before a road licence.
Oxfordshire County Council’s DIY waste page gives each household a free allowance once every seven days: up to two 50-litre rubble bags (or five 20-litre bags), or one bulky item no larger than 2000 mm x 750 mm x 700 mm. Over that allowance, hardcore and rubble is listed at £2.50 per 20-litre bag; plasterboard at £4.30 per 20-litre bag or £11.80 per door-sized sheet (2 m x 1 m). Plasterboard is accepted only at Redbridge and Ardley Fields. Own-home DIY only; book a visit. Source: Oxfordshire DIY waste charges.
How to hire without a fake directory
- Decide the size from the job – What size skip do I need?.
- If it has to sit on the road, tell the firm you are in the Oxfordshire County Council area and ask them to apply. Give them more than five working days.
- Ask for the waste-carrier number and check it – how to check a waste carrier licence.
- Keep plasterboard, electricals and sofas out of a mixed skip unless the operator says otherwise – what you cannot put in a skip.
Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no prices for skip hire on this page. The £125 / £140 figures are Oxfordshire County Council’s published permit fees, not a hire quote. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link.
