Skip permit: Brighton and Hove City Council

First published 12 September 2026. Last checked 12 September 2026.

If the skip sits on a public road in the Brighton and Hove City Council area, you need a highway skip licence. On the council page checked 12 Sep 2026: standard skip 2026/27: £15.40 (1 day), £48.40 (7 days), £89.10 (28 days). 3 days' notice. A skip wholly on private land you control does not need this licence.

You usually do not apply as a householder. Tell the hire firm at booking and give them the notice the council asks for. Do not put the skip on the pavement unless the licence allows it.

When you need one

The statutory hook is Highways Act 1980, section 139. National rule: Do I need a skip permit?.

Who applies

Follow what Brighton and Hove City Council publishes: 3 days' notice; specialist companies; £10m PL; parking bay suspension separate if needed. That matches the usual England pattern – the skip company applies.

A sensible order

  1. Can it sit wholly on the drive? If yes, book that and skip the licence.
  2. If it has to go on the road, tell the hire firm at booking. They apply. Give them the notice above.
  3. Check their waste-carrier number – how to check a waste carrier licence.
  4. Size the job on the size guide.

Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no skip-hire prices on this page. Fee figures above are the council’s published permit charges (or an honest note when none was printed), not a hire quote.
