Skip permit: City of London Corporation

First published 12 September 2026. Last checked 12 September 2026.

The City of London Corporation does not allow a builder’s skip to stand on the public highway. Official guidance (checked 12 Sep 2026) says skips must remain on the vehicle, and materials need to sit inside a licensed hoarding. TfL Red Routes in the Square Mile are a separate TfL matter. A skip wholly on private land you control is outside this highway rule.

Do not plan a standing highway skip in the City. Ask the hire firm about wait-and-load, private land, or a hoarding licence via the Corporation’s scaffolding team. Do not invent a skip-licence fee – there is no ordinary standing-skip permit.

When you need one

The statutory hook is Highways Act 1980, section 139. National rule: Do I need a skip permit?. London hub: Skip hire in London.

Who applies

Follow what City of London Corporation publishes: City Corporation highway authority except TfL Red Routes; materials/skips need to sit inside a licensed hoarding; contact scaffolding@cityoflondon.gov.uk. That matches the usual England pattern – the skip company applies.

Fee, notice and conditions

Checked City of London Corporation’s page on 12 Sep 2026. No ordinary standing-skip pound fee applies because standing highway skips are not permitted – we do not invent one.

A sensible order

  1. Can it sit wholly on the drive? If yes, book that and skip the licence.
  2. If it has to go on the road, tell the hire firm at booking. They apply. Give them the notice above. Check whether the kerb is borough or TfL.
  3. Check their waste-carrier number – how to check a waste carrier licence.
  4. Size the job on the size guide.

Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no skip-hire prices on this page. Fee figures above are the council’s published permit charges (or an honest note when none was printed), not a hire quote.
