Skip permit: South Ayrshire Council

First published 11 September 2026. Last checked 11 September 2026.

If the skip sits on a South Ayrshire public road, you need a skip permit under the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984 – not Highways Act 1980. South Ayrshire’s roads service is delivered with East Ayrshire through the Ayrshire Roads Alliance. ARA’s skip permit page (checked 11 September 2026) publishes £60.50 per four weeks for South Ayrshire. The skip hire company obtains and pays for the permit.

Trunk roads A76 / A77 / A78 are handled by Amey for Transport Scotland – not ARA. Do not use East Ayrshire’s £62 figure for a South Ayrshire street.

When you need one

The statutory hook is Roads (Scotland) Act 1984, section 85.

Who applies

It is the responsibility of the skip hire company providing the skip to obtain this permit and pay the fee. Contact ara.roadspermits@ayrshireroadsalliance.org.

A sensible order

  1. Can it sit wholly on the drive? If yes, book that and skip the permit.
  2. If it has to go on the road, tell the hire firm which roads authority covers your street and ask them to apply under the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984.
  3. Check their waste-carrier registration on SEPA – how to check a waste carrier licence.
  4. Size the job on the size guide.

Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no skip-hire prices on this page. The fee figures are South Ayrshire Council's published permit charges, not a hire quote. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link.
