Waste
Sofas, POPs seating and skips
Do not put a sofa, armchair or similar upholstered domestic seating into a mixed skip. Environment Agency guidance for England says waste upholstered domestic seating that may contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs) must not be mixed with other waste in a skip or HWRC bay. If it is mixed, the whole load is treated as POPs waste until the seating can be separated. It must be incinerated, not landfilled.
Operators will often refuse the load, surcharge you, or reclassify the whole skip if a sofa goes in. Their list wins for that booking. Ask before you tip anything soft into a mixed hire.
What the rule covers
The live GOV.UK page is Manage waste upholstered domestic seating containing POPs (Environment Agency; last updated 29 July 2026). Covered items typically include:
- sofas and sofa beds
- armchairs
- upholstered dining chairs and stools
- bean bags and similar upholstered domestic seating
Mattresses and small scatter cushions (under about 60 cm × 60 cm in that guidance) sit outside the seating list – still ask, because operators often refuse mattresses for other reasons. Household-type seating from pubs, hotels and offices is usually treated the same way once it is waste.
Wales and Scotland publish parallel POPs seating guidance through Natural Resources Wales and SEPA. The practical householder rule is the same: keep soft seating out of the mixed skip.
What operators do
| Situation | Usual outcome | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sofa already in a mixed skip | Refuse, surcharge, or treat the whole load as POPs waste | You pay for the mistake. Do not hope it “goes through”. |
| House clearance with soft furnishings | Skip for hard mixed waste; seating collected separately | See the 8-yard page for light clearance volume. Confirm seating before you book a large skip. |
| One sofa and a small tidy | Council bulky / HWRC POPs bay for the sofa; skip or bag for the rest | Often cheaper and cleaner than forcing one product to take both. |
Alternatives
- Council bulky waste collection – usually the default for a sofa or armchair.
- Household recycling centre (HWRC) POPs / bulky-seating bay, if yours has one. Pre-book if the council asks.
- Reuse: charity or furniture reuse schemes, if the item is still fit for use and they will take it.
- A specialist seating / POPs collection the hire firm offers as a separate line – not the mixed skip.
The longer banned and restricted list is what you cannot put in a skip. Fridges and other electricals are a different stream – see fridges, freezers and WEEE.
Placement and the carrier
- Size the rest of the job on the size guide.
- Highway placement still needs a licence – Do I need a skip permit?.
- Check the CBDU waste-carrier number – how to check a waste carrier licence.
Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no prices on this page. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link. Until then, use a licensed local operator and confirm the details with them.
