Fridges, freezers and WEEE out of the skip

First published 12 September 2026. Last checked 12 September 2026.

Do not put a fridge, freezer or most other electricals into a mixed skip. Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is a separate stream. Cooling appliances need the gases recovered at an authorised facility. Retailers have take-back duties when you buy a replacement; councils and HWRCs usually take household WEEE.

Hire firms routinely refuse fridges and freezers in a mixed skip. If one goes in, they can leave the load, surcharge you, or reclassify it. Ask before you book if white goods are part of the clear-out.

What the rules say

UK WEEE rules sit under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2013 (as amended). GOV.UK’s working pages:

Larger shops (EEE sales area over 400 square metres) must also take small WEEE (under 25 cm on its longest side) without a new purchase. That does not turn a fridge into “small WEEE”. Cooling appliances still need a proper collection or HWRC drop.

This page does not invent council collection fees or retailer transport charges. Some councils charge for bulky white goods; some do not. Some retailers collect on delivery; some ask you to return the old item. Check the offer in front of you.

Usual routes

Item Usual route Notes
Fridge or freezer you are replacing Retailer like-for-like take-back Ask when you buy. Online sellers have the same duty.
Fridge or freezer you are not replacing Council bulky collection or HWRC Take it whole where the site asks. Do not strip gases yourself.
TV, IT, small appliances HWRC WEEE bay, or small-WEEE take-back at a large retailer Still not for a mixed skip unless the operator has a written WEEE arrangement – rare for domestic hire.
Kitchen refit with old fridge Skip for fit-out waste; fridge on a WEEE route See kitchen refit.

What stays out of the mixed skip

Alongside fridges and freezers: TVs, monitors, computers, microwaves, vacuum cleaners, and most other plugged-in kit. Fluorescent tubes and many batteries are also restricted. Soft seating is a POPs problem, not a WEEE problem – sofas and POPs. Full list: what you cannot put in a skip.
