Skip hire in Glasgow

First published 11 September 2026. Last checked 11 September 2026.

Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city and one roads authority for the whole G postcode. A skip on the public road needs Glasgow City Council permission under the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984 – not Highways Act 1980. The hire firm usually applies; Glasgow asks for at least 28 working days. A skip wholly on a private drive you control does not need that permit. This page is placement and waste rules, not a list of firms.

Skip Clerk does not invent provider rankings, phone numbers or “top skips in Glasgow”. Check the carrier on SEPA, then ask who will apply for the road permit.

Which authority

Glasgow City Council is the roads authority. Full permit detail: Skip permit: Glasgow City Council. On that page (checked 11 September 2026): 2026/27 Book of Charges – city centre £92 first week / £49 each extra week; outside city centre £55 / £36.75; minimum 28 working days; skip permit size up to 1.8 m × 3.7 m; city centre bounded by the M8, the Clyde and Saltmarket / High St / Castle St. Country map: Skip hire in Scotland.

Private drive vs road

Household recycling centres

Glasgow’s household waste recycling centres (Dawsholm, Easter Queenslie, Polmadie, Shieldhall) are for Glasgow residents only; suspected traders may be refused. Sites are open Monday–Sunday 08:00–18:00 (last entry 17:45). Commercial waste is not accepted at the HWRC – it must go via the weighbridge. Cars over 1.8 m and vans have restricted access (vans at Shieldhall and Dawsholm only in set morning/afternoon windows; Polmadie refuses vans). Source: Glasgow HWRCs. Easter Queenslie has a published redevelopment closure notice from 20 April 2026 – check the council page before you travel.

City-centre vs outside permit fees

If the skip must sit on the road inside the M8–Clyde–Saltmarket box, the first-week fee is the higher city-centre rate. Outside that box the outside rate applies. Tell the hire firm which side of the line you are on. Full table: Skip permit: Glasgow City Council.

How to hire without a fake directory

  1. Decide the size from the job – What size skip do I need?.
  2. If it has to sit on the road, name the roads authority and ask the firm to apply. Scotland is not Highways Act 1980.
  3. Ask for the waste-carrier number and check it on SEPA – how to check a waste carrier licence.
  4. Keep plasterboard, electricals and sofas out of a mixed skip unless the operator says otherwise – what you cannot put in a skip.

Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no prices for skip hire on this page. The £92 / £55 figures are Glasgow’s published 2026/27 permit fees, not a hire quote. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link.
