Skip hire in Plymouth
Plymouth is its own unitary city, not Devon County Council. A skip on the public road needs a Plymouth City Council skip permit. You cannot put a skip on the pavement. A skip wholly on private land does not need a licence. This page is placement and waste rules, not a list of firms.
Skip Clerk does not invent provider rankings, phone numbers or “top skips in Plymouth”. Plymouth’s highways page still does not print a skip-licence fee – do not invent one from this guide. Check the carrier’s CBDU number, then ask who will apply for the road licence.
Which authority
Plymouth City Council is the highway authority. Full permit detail: Skip permit: Plymouth City Council. On that page (re-checked 6 September 2026): public road needs a permit; pavement banned; private land entirely needs no licence; skip bags and Hippo bags also need a licence; lights and markings may be required with a fine up to £1,000 if you fail; no skip-licence fee printed on the other highways permits page today. Private drive vs road
- Wholly on a driveway or other private land you control: no Plymouth highway licence.
- Any part on the public road: yes. Ask the hire firm to apply via Plymouth’s form.
- Pavement: not allowed in Plymouth. National rule: Do I need a skip permit?.
DIY waste note
Plymouth runs its own household recycling centres under Plymouth City Council’s waste pages – that is not the Devon County Council chargeable-waste rule used in Ivybridge or Tavistock. For plasterboard, electricals and sofas, follow the hire firm’s rules and the national guides. National gypsum background: Plasterboard and skips. What to keep out: what you cannot put in a skip.
How to hire without a fake directory
- Decide the size from the job – What size skip do I need?.
- If it has to sit on the road, tell the firm you are in Plymouth City Council and ask them to apply. Prefer a driveway drop if the gate allows it.
- Ask for the waste-carrier number and check it – how to check a waste carrier licence.
- Keep plasterboard, electricals and sofas out of a mixed skip unless the operator says otherwise – what you cannot put in a skip.
Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no prices for skip hire on this page. We do not invent a Plymouth permit fee. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link.
