Skip permit: London Borough of Hounslow

First published 7 September 2026. Last checked 7 September 2026.

If the skip sits on a public highway in the London Borough of Hounslow, only a Hounslow Highways registered skip company can apply for the permit. Hounslow Highways (checked 7 September 2026) lists £122.21 for 14 days. Issuing can take up to 72 hours once approved; a skip in a controlled parking zone needs a bay suspension first. A skip wholly on private land you control does not need this permit.

You do not apply as a householder or business. Tell the hire firm at booking. If the bay is in a CPZ, allow up to ten working days for the parking suspension before the skip permit can issue. Do not put the skip on the pavement or verge.

When you need one

The statutory hook is Highways Act 1980, section 139: a builder’s skip must not be deposited on a highway without the highway authority’s permission.

Who applies

Hounslow Council and Hounslow Highways are clear: registered skip hire companies only. Permits are not issued to residents or businesses. The hire firm applies online via the Hounslow Highways FMS portal. That matches the usual England-and-Wales pattern on GOV.UK.

Key conditions (summary)

TfL red routes

Hounslow’s skip pages cover the borough highway network run with Hounslow Highways. They do not spell out red-route rules. Separately, Transport for London’s highway licences page states that TfL licenses skips on the Transport for London Road Network (red routes), and that skip licences there are considered only in rare cases away from the main carriageway. If the drop sits on a red route, the hire firm needs TfL, not the Hounslow Highways permit.

A sensible order

  1. Can it sit wholly on the drive? If yes, book that and skip the highway permit.
  2. If it has to go on the road, tell the hire firm you are in the London Borough of Hounslow and ask them to apply. Ask whether the bay is in a CPZ.
  3. If it is a CPZ bay, start the parking suspension early (up to ten working days).
  4. Check their waste-carrier number – how to check a waste carrier licence.
  5. Size the job on the size guide. Keep plasterboard out of a mixed skip unless they say otherwise – plasterboard and skips.

Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no skip-hire prices on this page. The £122.21 figure is Hounslow Highways’ published permit fee, dated to the page check above, not a hire quote. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link.
