Skip permit: Wiltshire Council

First published 25 September 2026. Last checked 25 September 2026.

If the skip sits on a public road in the Wiltshire Council area, you need a highway skip licence. On the council page checked 25 Sep 2026: fee not printed on council page. S139 skip licence. A skip wholly on private land you control does not need this licence.

Tell the hire firm at booking if it must sit on the road. Do not invent a fee from a third-party site – recheck the council page on the day you book. Do not put the skip on the pavement unless the licence allows it.

When you need one

The statutory hook is Highways Act 1980, section 139. National rule: Do I need a skip permit?.

Who applies

Follow what Wiltshire Council publishes: S139 skip licence; see licences-permits-building application forms. That matches the usual England pattern – the skip company applies.

Fee, notice and conditions

Checked Wiltshire Council’s page on 25 Sep 2026. No pound fee was printed there – we do not invent one. Ask the hire firm what they will be charged.

A sensible order

  1. Can it sit wholly on the drive? If yes, book that and skip the licence.
  2. If it has to go on the road, tell the hire firm at booking. They apply. Give them the notice above.
  3. Check their waste-carrier number – how to check a waste carrier licence.
  4. Size the job on the size guide.

Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no skip-hire prices on this page. Fee figures above are the council’s published permit charges (or an honest note when none was printed), not a hire quote.
