Waste
Plasterboard: when a separate bag is required
A separate plasterboard bag (or dedicated gypsum skip) is required whenever the hire firm will not accept board in the mixed load – which is the usual case. Environment Agency landfill guidance says gypsum-based waste must not go to a landfill cell that accepts biodegradable waste. That is why operators treat boarding as its own stream. This page complements Plasterboard and skips; it does not replace it.
There is no single national “allowed number of bags in a mixed skip”. Some firms refuse board outright. Some will take bagged offcuts if you ask and keep them separate. Their written rule for that booking wins.
When you need a separate bag or skip
| Load | Separate bag / gypsum skip? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Whole sheets from a room strip-out | Yes | Tell the firm it is gypsum when you book. Keep it dry if you can. |
| Kitchen or bathroom with boarding plus mixed waste | Yes for the board | Mixed skip for units, timber and tiles; board in its own bag or collection. See kitchen and bathroom. |
| A few clean offcuts | Often HWRC plasterboard bay instead | Or a small dedicated bag if the council route is awkward. Pre-book HWRC if asked. |
| Bagged board the operator has agreed in writing | Only then inside a mixed skip | Not a national allowance. If they refuse at collection, you pay for the mistake. |
| Suspect asbestos board | Stop – not a hire skip | GOV.UK: asbestos in your home. |
How this sits with the mixed skip
Book the mixed waste on the size guide. Size the boarding with the operator – dedicated gypsum bags and skips use the same yard language as mixed products, but they are not interchangeable. Do not bury sheets under units or spoil.
Painted, tiled or timber-backed board is still gypsum until the operator says otherwise. Keep wood, masonry and tiles out of the plasterboard bag so the receiving site can recycle it.
HWRC and the carrier
- Householders can often take a small amount of DIY plasterboard to a recycling site. Local rule – check before you drive. Trade waste is usually refused or charged as commercial.
- A second dedicated bag or skip still needs space. Driveway: usually no highway permit. Road: Do I need a skip permit?.
- Carrier check: how to check a waste carrier licence.
- Full restricted list: what you cannot put in a skip.
Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no prices on this page. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link. Until then, use a licensed local operator and confirm the details with them.
