Permits
Skip permit: Bath and North East Somerset
If the skip sits on a public road in Bath and North East Somerset, the supplier or contractor applies – householders may not apply alone. Urgent applications take about two days; others up to five. BANES did not print a skip-licence fee on the application page on 2 September 2026. A skip wholly on private land with no encroachment does not need a licence.
Do not invent a BANES skip fee from this page – the council did not list one on the application page today. Ask the hire firm what they will charge you for the licence step. Parking suspension may also be needed in a residents’ parking zone or controlled bay.
When you need one
- Public road or highway in BANES (Bath, Keynsham, Midsomer Norton, Radstock and the rest of the unitary): yes.
- Private land with no encroachment onto the highway: no licence.
- Any encroachment onto the highway counts as on the highway. National rule: Do I need a skip permit?.
The statutory hook is still Highways Act 1980, section 139.
Who applies
BANES’s page: supplier or contractor. Householders may not apply on their own. The firm needs at least £5 million public liability insurance. You ask them to apply when you book.

A sensible order
- Can it sit wholly on the drive with no overhang? If yes, book that and skip the licence.
- If it has to go on the road, tell the hire firm at booking. They apply. Give them enough notice for a non-urgent case (up to five days).
- Check their waste-carrier number – how to check a waste carrier licence.
- Size the job on the size guide. Keep plasterboard out of a mixed skip unless they say otherwise – plasterboard and skips.
Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no skip-hire prices on this page. We have not invented a BANES permit fee. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link.
