Permits
Skip permit: North Somerset Council
If the skip sits on a public road in North Somerset, the company providing the skip applies. The 2026–27 charges PDF lists £86 standard, £122 with less than five working days’ notice, and £172 retrospective. A skip wholly on private land you control does not need this licence.
A skip on the highway also needs a parking bay suspension. The firm applies for both. Do not put the skip on the pavement.
When you need one
- Public road or highway in North Somerset (Weston-super-Mare, Clevedon, Portishead, Nailsea and the rest of the unitary): yes.
- Wholly on a driveway or other private land you control: no. National rule on Do I need a skip permit?.
- Any encroachment onto the highway counts as on the highway.
The statutory hook is still Highways Act 1980, section 139.
Who applies
North Somerset’s page: the company providing the skip applies, with the applicable fee and evidence of at least £5 million public liability insurance. You ask the hire firm to do it when you book. You do not fill the form as a householder.

A sensible order
- Can it sit wholly on the drive? If yes, book that and skip the licence.
- If it has to go on the road, tell the hire firm at booking. They apply for the licence and the bay suspension. Give them more than five working days.
- Check their waste-carrier number – how to check a waste carrier licence.
- Size the job on the size guide. Keep plasterboard out of a mixed skip unless they say otherwise – plasterboard and skips.
Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no skip-hire prices on this page. The £86 / £122 / £172 figures are North Somerset’s published permit fees from the 2026–27 charges PDF, not a hire quote. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link.
