Skip permit: North Ayrshire Council

First published 11 September 2026. Last checked 11 September 2026.

If the skip sits on a North Ayrshire public road, pavement or verge, you need a permit from North Ayrshire Council under the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984 – not Highways Act 1980. The road maintenance permits page (checked 11 September 2026) prices a skip permit at £74 per four-week block (for example 16 weeks is four times that = £296). Public liability insurance of at least £5 million is required. This is not handled by Ayrshire Roads Alliance (that covers East and South Ayrshire only).

Do not use East Ayrshire’s £62 or South Ayrshire’s £60.50 ARA fees for a North Ayrshire street. Contact roadspermits@north-ayrshire.gov.uk.

When you need one

The statutory hook is Roads (Scotland) Act 1984, section 85.

Who applies

Contact roadspermits@north-ayrshire.gov.uk / 01294 310000. In practice the hire firm usually applies – ask them at booking and supply the £5m PL certificate.

A sensible order

  1. Can it sit wholly on the drive? If yes, book that and skip the permit.
  2. If it has to go on the road, tell the hire firm which roads authority covers your street and ask them to apply under the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984.
  3. Check their waste-carrier registration on SEPA – how to check a waste carrier licence.
  4. Size the job on the size guide.

Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no skip-hire prices on this page. The fee figures are North Ayrshire Council's published permit charges, not a hire quote. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link.
