Skip permit: East Renfrewshire Council

First published 11 September 2026. Last checked 11 September 2026.

If the skip sits on an East Renfrewshire public road, footway or verge, you need consent under the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984, section 85 – not Highways Act 1980. The council’s skip licence page (last modified 1 April 2026; content verified 11 September 2026) publishes £98.00 for a 4 week permit. A retrospective permit for days the skip was already on the road without permission is charged as a separate permit at an additional £98.00. Apply around 10 working days in advance.

Scotland uses the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984. Do not use Renfrewshire Council’s higher fee for an East Renfrewshire street (Newton Mearns, Barrhead, Giffnock, Clarkston). Recheck the live skip licence page on the day you book.

When you need one

The statutory hook is Roads (Scotland) Act 1984, section 85.

Who applies

An application must be made for each separate skip location by the skip owner. In practice the hire firm usually applies – ask them at booking. The page links a PDF apply form.

A sensible order

  1. Can it sit wholly on the drive? If yes, book that and skip the permit.
  2. If it has to go on the road, tell the hire firm which roads authority covers your street and ask them to apply under the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984.
  3. Check their waste-carrier registration on SEPA – how to check a waste carrier licence.
  4. Size the job on the size guide.

Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no skip-hire prices on this page. The fee figures are East Renfrewshire Council's published permit charges, not a hire quote. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link.
