Skip permit: Flintshire Council

First published 11 September 2026. Last checked 11 September 2026.

If the skip sits on a Flintshire public highway, you need a council skip permit. Flintshire’s skip permit page (checked 11 September 2026) charges £60 for the first week and £25 for each subsequent week, needs at least two working days’ notice, and expects public liability insurance of £5 million. A skip wholly on private land you control does not need this permit.

Budget the first-week fee even for a short stay, and ask the hire firm to confirm their £5m public liability certificate is current before they apply.

When you need one

The statutory hook is still Highways Act 1980, section 139. National rule: Do I need a skip permit?.

Who applies

The hire firm / skip operator applies in practice. Allow at least two working days.

A sensible order

  1. Can it sit wholly on the drive? If yes, book that and skip the licence.
  2. If it has to go on the road, tell the hire firm at booking. They apply. Give them at least two working days.
  3. Check their waste-carrier number – how to check a waste carrier licence.
  4. Size the job on the size guide.
