Skip hire in Wales

First published 11 September 2026. Last checked 11 September 2026.

Wales does not use English county councils for highway skip licences. The 22 principal councils are the highway authorities. If the skip sits on a public road, pavement or verge, the permit comes from the principal council that looks after that road – not from a national Wales office, and not from a district that no longer exists.

This is a hub, not a list of firms. Skip Clerk does not invent provider rankings, phone numbers or “top skips in Wales”. Check the carrier’s CBDU number, then ask who will apply for the road permit.

Roads and highways in Wales

In England many areas still split district and county roles. In Wales the principal council is both the local authority and the highway authority for skip licences under the Highways Act 1980, section 139. GOV.UK’s skip licence guidance for England and Wales still applies: a skip wholly on private land you control does not need a highway permit; any part on the adopted highway does.

The 22 principal councils are: Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd, Isle of Anglesey, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Torfaen, Vale of Glamorgan, and Wrexham.

We only publish fees and notice periods we have checked on live council or official fee documents. Councils without a Skip Clerk permit page yet are not “missing firms” – they are waiting for verification.

How to hire without a fake directory

  1. Decide the size from the job – What size skip do I need?.
  2. Name the principal council for your road. Ask the hire firm to apply for that council’s highway skip permit if it sits on the road.
  3. Ask for the waste-carrier number and check it – how to check a waste carrier licence.
  4. Keep plasterboard, electricals and sofas out of a mixed skip unless the operator says otherwise – what you cannot put in a skip.

Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no prices for skip hire on this page. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link. Until then, use a licensed local operator and the council pages above.
