Skip permit: Newport City Council

First published 11 September 2026. Last checked 11 September 2026.

This page is for Newport in Wales (Newport City Council), not Newport on the Isle of Wight. Skips on the public highway must have a permit. Newport’s roads page (checked 11 September 2026) says the skip company applies and the permit charge is £63.63 for 14 days.

Ask to see the hire company’s permit, or contact the council to confirm it has been granted, before the skip arrives on the road.

When you need one

The statutory hook is still Highways Act 1980, section 139. National rule: Do I need a skip permit?.

Who applies

The skip company (skip owner) applies. Newport’s page states the hire firm applies for the licence for you.

A sensible order

  1. Can it sit wholly on the drive? If yes, book that and skip the licence.
  2. If it has to go on the road, tell the hire firm at booking. They apply. Confirm the firm has applied to Newport City Council (Wales).
  3. Check their waste-carrier number – how to check a waste carrier licence.
  4. Size the job on the size guide.

Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no skip-hire prices on this page. Fee figures above are the council’s published permit charges, not a hire quote. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link.
