Permits

Skip permit: Monmouthshire Council

First published 11 September 2026. Last checked 11 September 2026.

If the skip sits on a Monmouthshire public highway, the council’s skip licence applies. Monmouthshire’s skip licence/permit page (checked 11 September 2026) lists £108 for four weeks from 1 April 2026, plus £27 for each extra week. A skip wholly on private land you control does not need this licence.

From 1 April 2026 the four-week charge is £108. Ask the hire firm to apply and to confirm any extra-week charge before the skip overruns.

When you need one

The statutory hook is still Highways Act 1980, section 139. National rule: Do I need a skip permit?.

A sensible order

  1. Can it sit wholly on the drive? If yes, book that and skip the licence.
  2. If it has to go on the road, tell the hire firm at booking. They apply. Ask them to use Monmouthshire’s skip licence process and confirm the from-April-2026 fee.
  3. Check their waste-carrier number – how to check a waste carrier licence.
  4. Size the job on the size guide.
