Skip permit: South Lanarkshire Council

First published 11 September 2026. Last checked 11 September 2026.

If the skip sits on a South Lanarkshire public road, you need a Section 85 builders skip permit from South Lanarkshire Council under the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984 – not Highways Act 1980. The roads permits table (checked 11 September 2026) publishes £80.93 per 2 weeks with a 14 day notice period. Pay with the application.

Scotland uses the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984, section 85. Do not assume Highways Act 1980 rules or English fees apply. Recheck the council table on the day you book.

When you need one

The statutory hook is Roads (Scotland) Act 1984, section 85.

Who applies

The council’s roads permits page does not print a householder-only ban in the text we checked. In practice the hire firm usually applies – ask them at booking and give them the 14-day notice.

A sensible order

  1. Can it sit wholly on the drive? If yes, book that and skip the permit.
  2. If it has to go on the road, tell the hire firm which roads authority covers your street and ask them to apply under the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984.
  3. Check their waste-carrier registration on SEPA – how to check a waste carrier licence.
  4. Size the job on the size guide.

Skip Clerk has no hire partners yet and no skip-hire prices on this page. The fee figures are South Lanarkshire Council's published permit charges, not a hire quote. When we add a booking link it will be marked as an affiliate link.
